This phrase is often embroidered to pictures of Christ. The idea being portrayed is that life is hard, but it will be worth it because of Christ. That simple idea is fine, but literally speaking, the saying is false...

It is tacky to sustain yourself.

I think it is encouraged at Church ... even expected. I would assume the rules are the same here. ;)

Sustaining yourself isn't bad - it's "proposing" your own name (err.. post) that you don't do. See this post.

I have heard many different religious cultures state this exact phrase before. From my understanding and idea of what this means, it simply is stating that life is good, but can and will be hard. Living a Christian life is wonderful, but can be difficult at times. Be in the world, but not of it.

haha Great minds think alike. I made a nearly identical entry on my family website (http://www.celestialfamily.org/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=46&topic=401.0) a few months after this was written.

The last sentence is untenable: "And let's think about these catchy phrases before we allow them to permeate our entire culture." Why? Because it assumes we actually have control over what permeates our entire culture.

The author "aarnott" is clearly ignorant of Jesus' teachings and the meanings of his messages. If "aarnott" knew anything about what Jesus taught, he'd know that Jesus' messages were symbolic not literal. So to try to find literal meaning in what He said, you'd have to be an idiot "aarnott"... The quote, "He (Jesus) never said it would be easy, He only said it would be worth it." has nothing to do with Jesus saying, "For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." (Matthew 11:30) Here Jesus is referring to the fact that by believing in Him you have a place in heaven, that's all it takes, you don't have to submit to the ways before, like the jews before Him, taking up sacrifices, following the jewish laws, etc. it is simple (easy), just Believe in Him. Therefore, in that sense, yes, "His yoke is easy and the burden is light." But he is only referring to your way to heaven, through Him. He is Not referring to life and the world we live in. However, the following passages more accurately depict what the quote,"He never said it would be easy, He only said it would be worth it" is to mean:

Matthew 5:10 "Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 5:11 "Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

So, when people say, "He never said it would be easy, He only said it would be worth it," all of these quotes are referring to life in this world, and the way people of the world would make it for you if you are Christian, because as we all know everyone sins, no one is perfect, and because of sin, life IS hard, and difficult. But because of Jesus taking our sins/imperfections upon him, we will be saved. God doesn't want it to be hard on us, He wishes we could have it "easy," so to speak, and live in Paradise, as he intended in the beginning. But as humans, we are imperfect, we make bad choices (which God allows because he gives us freedom of choice, "free will") and through our stupid, selfish, dumb choices, and mistakes, like the one "aarnott" has made posting such an incorrect post, we cause our own grief and difficulties, as the quote says, making life hard not easy, for ourselves and others. But also as the latter part of the quote says and means, as hard as we make it on ourselves, we simply must believe in Him (Jesus, the one who died for us) and all the troubles of this life will be well worth it, when we go to heaven. So quite frankly I find the quote,"He never said it would be easy, He only said it would be worth it," to be quite accurate, and I very much want it to permeate my culture because it is TRUTH, and not at all false.
