It's a good article, and it certainly seems that the average church member, especially where there is a large LDS community, is completely out of line with church leadership on this. No matter how many times President Hinckley says it, a few just don't seem to get the "hate the sin, love the sinner" concept.
But neither the doctrine nor the policy has changed. The title of the article was misleading, perhaps deliberately, and people may have opposed this story for that reason.
