Great reading. I wish NOMs would consider this material before talking about how much they are champions of freedom.

Uno Problemo...

Slavery WAS allowed in Deseret, and the state of Utah...

In fact it was the only slave territory...

"Slavery was legal in Utah as a result of the Compromise of 1850, which brought California into the Union as a free state while allowing Utah and New Mexico territories the option of deciding the issue by "popular sovereignty." Some Mormon pioneers from the South had brought African-American slaves with them when they migrated west. Some freed their slaves in Utah; others who went on to California had to emancipate them there."- Utah History to Go

If you look at the 1850, or 1860 census of Utah (I forget which one, maybe both) there are slave schedules for Utah, listing all slaves in the territory. (You can find them on ancestry.com, with a free trial, but will register for it.)

Not only is the slavery thing flat wrong, I doubt the Abraham Lincoln part. Wasn't it he who said when asked about the "Mormon Problem" when a farmer comes to a rock in his field, he plows around it."

Actually, he's right about Lincoln. Check out pbs.org and search 'Lincoln' to find out his info. And frankly, I think he has the right idea about slavery also. the slaves you are referring to were outlawed under Brigham Young, and those plantations went bust soon after establishing. I never kne the Utes were into the slave trade until this guy mentioned it.

So....Hhhhh...

Is it partisanship or are you a 'States Rights' advocate too?
written by canadiancynic 648 days ago
No, it's more of a justified negative bias against people with an unjustified negative bias.
