Syracuse University professor Arthur C. Brooks is about to become the darling of the religious right in America -- and it's making him nervous. The child of academics, raised in a liberal household and educated in the liberal arts, Brooks has written a book that concludes religious conservatives donate far more money than secular liberals to all sorts of charitable activities, irrespective of income.

"Humanitarian donations are used to provide assistance worldwide without regard to race or religion, and plays a significant role in assisting victims of natural disasters, including being among first responders with aid such as hygiene kits, food and water, and blankets. Current humanitarian projects include neonatal resuscitation training, wheelchair placement, eye surgery initiatives to help the blind, well drilling projects for water sources, and other health and wellness projects. 100 percent of all donations is used to help the needy (overhead for administering aid is paid from the general funds of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints)."
How many charities can say that 100% of their funds go to helping those in need?
Regarding the relationship between this heading, since Mormons are usually conservative, this heading is relevant, considering that Mormons donate considerable amounts of money that ends up in humanitarian relief.
Call it self congratulatory back patting. Thus sayeth the Lord "They have their reward."
Don't get me wrong, I am all for charity. I think anyone who gives to it is doing themselves and the world a great service. Would that all men could be so generous and that poverty as we know it could be eradicated. It is just that there is a certain smugness in making this news that bothers me. It just seems self righteous.
The real question, are conservative mormons or liberal mormons or moderate mormons better philanthropists? Guess it depends where Jon Huntsman and Bill Marriott fall.
