The article points out that while there are other high ranking Mormons already in Washington, Harry Reid will be the highest ranked ever. The assertion in the article is that this shows that LDS folks have gained more acceptance as part of the US mainstream.

This article is so completely against my previous impressions of Senator Reid. I'm trying to decide if I pre-judged or he's really the straight-shootin' Mormon described in the article. Insights?

I have friends who live in the same ward as Senator Reid, and I've heard many good things about him from them. I've been surprised at disappointed at how nasty some fellow LDS folks have been about him. An LDS person third in line to the presidency-- that's pretty cool.

Same here, Ted. Maybe I need to get to know Senator Reid better.

I just saw another poll about "how likely are you to vote for a Mormon to be president ... " and began to wonder, will Americans (I'm Canadian) be less likely to consider a Mormon for president (specifically Mitt) if there is a Mormon as the leader of the Senate? Could this be a game that Democrats are playing to keep Mitt out of the White House? Like I said, I'm Canadian and not that on top of American politics, but thought it was and interesting thought.

I doubt that the Democrats are terribly worried about Mitt. I think they're more worried about McCain. I did a phone call the other day which was a poll about whether I would vote for certain religious groups-- Moslem was mentioned and Mormon. It also asked which Republicans I would vote for in a bunch of hypothetical matchups, such as Guiliani vs Romney, then vs. McCain, etc.

And to complete the answer to the comment by circa 1978, I doubt that many Americans know who the majority leader of the Senate is, let alone that he's Mormon. Harry Reid is majority leader of the senate because he's worked his way there through seniority and being able to play the game well with others.
