The Mormon faith is spreading. But is it a world religion?

Pretty good article!

I like the questions it poses, especially about the existence/lack of cultural diversity in the Church in other countries. Having been born and raised in a Latin American country, I can say there is both correlation (mainly regarding the doctrinal principles, which tend to be morally conservative), and also an opposition (specifically, with regards to economic policy). LDS members in Latin America are more centric and less libertarian in economic matters due to cultural-historical reasons (Catholic influence), as opposed to the Puritan heritage of most Americans.

Note: I say this without criticizing either ideology.

I find these types of articles incredibly interesting (Newsweek and Time usually publish a major article on the church every 5 years or so) because they are very carefully written; they never say anything truly positive or productively true about doctrine or progress in the church but they are also careful never to publish anything controversial or accusatory either. It seems journalism walks a very fine line in regards to the church, never really positive or negative. I find this article's question about Mormonism as a world religion a unique take. I also find it interesting in a reputable article about the church that the word 'Christianity' is only mentioned twice; the first in reference to a statistic and the second tying in the idea of a "Christian millennium". I personally think that this noticeable and important omission ties into the LDS Church and its greater role in a global society. I think many (both in and outside the faith) still view the church as "the other". We become "the other" in Christian ideology, doctrine, and culture. It's ironic to see an article asking a thematic question about the LDS Church developing as a "world religion" while using this kind of rhetoric... (i.e. in this case wouldn't the "world religion" in fact be Christianity?) One can easily see how the "us and them" sentiments develop on both sides of the fence.
