Connor quotes a recent article by Damon Linker about Mitt Romney's Mormonism and a response by Richard Bushman. Great reads.

This discussion seems to mimic somewhat a common topic in the bloggernacle -- how do members of the Church balance personal revelation with directives from their ecclesiastical leaders? Damon Linker's essays seems to discount the idea that some things are outside the sphere of appropriate Church direction. I think Linker overlooks a very important tenet of the restored gospel: "it is not meet that [God] should command in all things." (D&C 58:26) The Church has repeatedly affirms its position that LDS elected officials are not compelled to act or vote as the Church dictates, and this is backed up by decades of LDS public service. It appears, however, that many people believe this could change if Romney were to win the White House.
