Sustaind.org is sick. :( If you're a PHP programmer, can you help us upgrade Sustain'd and get it working again? If interested, email richard AT moregoodfoundation DOT org.

An interview with Ann Wilde, widow of Ogden Kraut. Ann was a polygamist wife, and she's also extremely bright and articulate. This is a video of a discussion with her about polygamy in the early LDS church.

I still take issue with the "Mormon Fundamentalist" title as rather misleading. To quote an officail Church news release last year: "Polygamists and polygamist organizations that occasionally make the news are not dissident wings of the Church or fundamentalists."

The problem is that the LDS Church out of Salt Lake City (the one we are most all members of) does not have ownership of the term "Mormon" and cannot, in fact, ever "own" the term, anymore than anyone can own the term "Christian". What do you do with the RLDS or the Strangites, whose history mirrors ours up till right after Nauvoo, and whose full names incorporate the full name of our church (aside from minor details, like hyphens)? Are they not just as entitled to use the name, giving their heritage in the Restoration of Joseph Smith? What about the fact that our church was once called the Church of Christ? Other churches exist today and at that time as well that are called the Church of Christ.

A person can call themselves a Mormon and have no connection with the LDS church of Salt Lake City. And they would not be incorrect. The term Mormon is not exclusive. It is very broad, and encompasses a wide array of Restorationist churches that trace their founding back to Joseph Smith. While I am somewhat sympathetic to the LDS Church's desire to not be confused with other churches, eventually they must come to grips with the fact that they are not the sole curator of Joseph Smith's legacy, anymore than the Roman Catholic Church is the sole arbiter of who or who is not a Christian.

So perhaps we should refer to Catholics and Eastern Orthodox as the Christian Church, protestants and the protestant christian church, Mormons, Strangites and Community of Christ as the restored Christian Church, and Fundamentalists and the restored restored Christian church. Then perhaps everyone could be happy.

Doc, I think that'd work. :)
