First came2pass.com, and now this.. all based on Pligg, like Sustain'd. C'mon guys, I beat you to the punch, admit it! :)

For what it's worth, I didn't even know this site existed until after I'd created WardSocial.

In seeing all these 'positive' sites I'm getting flasbacks of the old Sugar Beet parody band "Appropriate Train". They suck, but hey! They are appropriate!

First of all, I didn't create this site, but second, I thought it was far better than Sustain'd, especially Design-wise.

Also, "first" is not always "best".

I'm the creator of WardSocial and I just wanted to say that Dewey's attitude is not the attitude I want to create with my site. I read Sustain'd as well and think it's a great site. I'm aiming for my site to be more of an official news place, but again, it's up to the user. Anyway, I just wanted to post and say his attitude is not mine. By the way, great work on Sustain'd, it's looking good.

Shoot, I did it again. I shouldn't do this while I'm doing something else at the same time. I clicked on Sustain when I meant to oppose. The main thing I dislike about WardSocial is the "positive" part of it. I'm interested in stuff that is unusual, well-written, or just plain interesting. I'm not particularly interested in stuff that's been prescreened for "positiveness".

Nothing on WardSocial is "prescreened", anybody can submit anything. It's only the inappropriate stuff I'm wishing to keep off the site. Obviously I'd prefer more positive stories to negative ones, but I'm definitely not a censor.

Things I like about Sustain'd:

* Many people contributed ideas to how it worked

* Chance to oppose stories -- vital for eliminating spam

* No ads -- a big plus

* Currently has the most stories marked

Things I like about WardSocial:

* Screenshots of the sites they link to

* Robust filters and search categories

* Relatively pleasing design uses most of screen

Things I like about Came2Pass:

* Clean design that uses most of the screen

* Pop-up screenshots of the sites they link to

* Tagging

I actually like several of the features of the other two sites, but they seem substantially similar in most respects. Sustain'd definitely has the largest body of posts to date, but that could change.

Thanks for your comments forpeterssake. Any more feedback you have is appreciated. FYI, I'm working on a redesign of Came2Pass that will continue to include the things you like, plus much more.

Sustain'd targets a more tech audience - I think it can work in harmony with Came2Pass.com. I encourage you to be a member of both sites! I know I will. Also, compared to Ward Social, Came2Pass.com is growing faster and has many more articles posted and higher votes, increasing each day. There are also many more categories and opportunities for good LDS content. Again, let me know what I can do to make it better and I'll incorporate that into the design.

cboyack - thanks for what you're doing here on Sustain'd. I like what you've produced. I've also heard a lot of good things about you personally! If we can work together at all to make our sites compliment each other more please let me know (you have my e-mail).

I'm surprised that you would post on here praising the virtues of your own site JesseStay. I've visited your site, although I'm not a member, and didn't know about either you or Sustain'd before starting WardSocial. One thing is clear, though, Came2Pass is not even close to WardSocial in quality. You have taken a common Pligg template, switched your logo on to it, added some ads, and that is about it. Almost all of the original code not written by you is still intact. User images, page organization, colors, etc, are carbon copies of the DigitalNature template.

I'm not trying to turn this into a flame war, at all, but I wanted to point the obvious.

*sigh* Another typo, sorry, I didn't "start WardSocial", I meant to type "started to visit".
written by deweyhewson 547 days ago
Hmm.. deweyhewson submits the post on the new wardsocial, and then makes a supposedly Freudian slip saying he started WardSocial -- oops, but no wait.. he "started to visit" WardSocial. Right...

Haha! deweyhewson also posted this same article on Came2Pass.com. I was not so nice though and removed it promptly (I applaud you for keeping this alive, including my article on Came2Pass earlier!). Also, search for the user deweyhewson on Digg. He also submitted articles about his site there. Also, note this post by deweyhewson on pligg:

    You be the judge...

Don't put yourself up so high and mighty just yet Jesse. Let's quote from your own Digg submission about your own site from a while back.

"Even the Mormons Have a Digg! A member of the Mormon Church has launched a new Digg-like website, called Came2Pass, focused towards members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. As the site states, it's "News for Mormons, By Mormons". Are smaller communities of people catching on to the Digg effect?"

That is similar self-promotion and misleading advertising to what I did.

Yes, I am the creator of WardSocial. I got over-excited about the promotion of something I had worked hard on and acted too knee-jerk on that. But you have done the same.

I honestly didn't know about either of your sites before starting WardSocial, and I'm not really trying to tear down either of you. I'm sorry this has turned into a flame war, I didn't mean for it to.

I apologize for misleading, I shouldn't have done that. That was not my intent when I wanted to start WardSocial.

I wanted to make a site to make a difference, as I'm sure you both did.

I have never denied it was me that posted anything. (Note that article on Digg was posted as "Uncle_Jesse") I don't have a problem with you promoting your site, but don't post it as someone else and say that person, under an alternate personality is not you! I think whenever you post on your competition's site, you have to expect some public criticism from the competition.
written by JesseStay 545 days ago
BTW, I'm not criticizing the fact that you posted on Digg. I'm criticizing the fact that you came on here as one person, and then as another person denied the fact that you were that person and even condemned the other's actions. I was using Digg to expose the fact that the two of you were the same person. You came on here criticizing sustain'd and came2pass, blatently pointing out and advertising our flaws (and blaming that criticism on another personality). I think Connor and I have a right to defend ourselves.

Why Are There Ads?

WardSocial has no intention of making money off of our religion. However, running a site of this size requires large amounts of bandwidth and space and so hosting costs need to be covered. The site is and will always remain completely free, so ads are necessary to pay those costs. No decision has been made as to what to do with excess revenue generated, but making a profit is not on the list of priorities.

--

I would really prefer not to have ads, but hosting can be expensive (I'm in the process of switching hosts right now, actually) and I figured ads could keep the site free and still have it paid for. We'll see what happens I guess, because I agree with you.

I'm looking at implementing a "Bury Story" option, but I wanted to hold off to see if there was a need for it (inappropriate submissions, for example) so that legitimate stories weren't buried.

Also, down the list of stories is a story I created called "WardSocial Beta" and I was hoping for the users to submit comments on how they like the site, suggestions, etc. I also have an e-mail address set up if they'd like to contact me that way (feedback@wardsocial.com).

Having a variety of sites is a plus. I can choose which one(s) I will frequent. Thank you to the operators of all the websites.
