This Slate Q&A explains temple garments and the general rules for wearing them. The article is quite descriptive and accurate, citing spokespersons from BYU and UVSC as sources.

I was so excited that the Slate article managed to cite informative-but-not-anti sites, and then I hit one towards the end (There's always got to be at least one, right? :P). Overall it's a very repectful treatment, though, and well done.

I thought so too. Put in this light, I really can't see what all the fuss is about. Perhaps the media has developed a misguided view about what garments really are (I'm thinking about Marriott's comments on 60 Minutes a few years ago).
