An AP article about opposition to Vice President Dick Cheney's planned commencement address at Brigham Young University.

comments

Interesting points from the article include an assertion that BYU students can't wear shorts (Daisy Dukes, perhaps not, but shorts are okay) and a quote from a political science professor indicating that inviting a moderate Republican would be okay but inviting Dick Cheney was unacceptable. (The school didn't invite Cheney; they invited Bush last year but he had schedule conflicts, and then the Vice President's office called this year.) Also interesting was a statement by Cheney's office that the speech would not be political.

GAAAK! They quoted 'Cougers don't cut corners'. That was my year, when they put up signs all over campus saying that and one wag went around with a pair of tin snips and clipped all the corners off the signs.... The signs disappeared shortly thereafter...LOLOL

Interesting. I like the fact that the BYU community is showing that they're mostly issues-based conservatives and not knee-jerk Republicans.

Since I already graduated and moved away from Utah, I don't care whether Cheney goes to BYU or not. I don't think it is necessarily immoral or inappropriate for him to speak at commencement (high-ranking government officials are traditionally appropriate for such kinds of ceremonies). On the other side, I don't have any kind of condemnation against concerned citizens who express dissent according to Cheney's record.

"The church has a policy of political neutrality and issues an annual statement declaring that both major political parties include ideals that Mormons could embrace."

I like this paragraph. It all comes to personal priorities. For the most part, the side of the scale you're on depends on the moral tradeoffs you make.

Precisely. I couldn't agree with your comment here more.

Having the vice president of the United States speak at your commecement is freaking awesome! People should be glad that he is going to speak. Politics aside, the students will likely remember their graduation speaker, and that is more then I could say.

Ronald Reagan came and spoke at BYU when I was there. There wasn't any big controversy about it.
