Kieth Merrill chimes in to comment on Richard Dutcher's recent sayonara to the Church. What he says is, in my opinion, spot on. Well worth the read.

I guess I just prefer my films to come from the anarchy of an artist rather than the predictability of a bureaucrat.
-Merrill is not only talented at filmmaking but also at sarcasm (hard to find people with strong yet sharp and elegant sarcastic remarks these days, most of the Internet's sarcasm is "your momma" kind of stuff) :)
-I think Merrill had legitimate reasons to blast Dutcher: a)Dutcher's comments were somewhat condescending and self-agrandizing, and b)Dutcher's mocked Merrill's work.
-Nevertheless, maybe the intensity of the sarcasm was a little too much. The sarcasm was funny but overkill can look a little silly. Also, I don't like the idea of kicking a person disaffected with the church on the way out (unless that person is trying to mark the whole place with piss, which I don't feel it was Dutcher's intention, at least with regards to his relationship with the Church. Maybe he did mark his way out with regards to the LDS filmmaking industry.)
It seems apparent to me that Merrill himself disagrees with you. His apology shows me signs of a sincere and humble man. I think this is a great lesson.
I never said that he was not a sincere and humble man. Even the most sincere of folk blow a corker once in a while. :) As I commented on the other RD thread, I think several of Dutcher's points are still valid, despite his apology and lack of tact in the matter.
