Merrill apologizes, at length, to Richard Dutcher.

comments

Merrill's image has grown a lot in my eyes. Apologizing in public (and especially over the Internet) takes a lot of courage and humility.

Good man. I agree with several of the points he made in his original rebuttal, but the barbs were quite sharp, I agree. It takes a big man to make such an apology, and I applaud him for it.

Wow, hw just put it on the line--in light of a conference talk, etc. It takes real humility to just lay one's fault on the line publicly like that.

Too the first two commenters, I find your "courageous" agreement with Merrill followed by you applauding his apology curiously incongruous. Was he right or not? Were you agreeing with his statements or not? Can you agree that he was right and agree that he was wrong? Which is more moving, bitterly tearing into Richard Dutcher or apologizing to him? Or are you two apologizing for your support of his initial sentiments in agreeing with the apology

Doc,

As I indicated, I agree with many of the points that Kieth made in his first letter. However, since he desired to retract them and regretted the tone of his letter, I think it's great he did so by issuing a formal (and public) apology.

Is there incongruence between those two thoughts? I don't think so. I agree with the main points of Kieth's first letter, but I do believe that his tone was a bit scathing, and as he pointed out in his apology, not in harmony with what Elder Holland taught in this last conference.

Despite the apology, I believe that Kieth probably stands by most of the points he initially made. But playing in the mud is not the way to express those concerns.

Doc, careful reading of both of my posts will provide the answer you seek.

My image of him has lowered. Maybe he should have used the 2 days it took to publish the apology to think about what he was going to say originally instead of hastily publishing vitriol.

I didn't sustain the original because it was so over the top. Nice apology.
