The German Apostle

A fascinating article in Der Spiegel about Dieter F. Uchdorf and the Church. Notice the Editor's Note at the end, indicating the article was changed at the behest of the Church to clarify that polygamists are not Mormons.

I sustained it because it is interesting, though some of the writer's take I found somewhat insulting. It's interesting to see how people just don't get it.

It seemed to me that the article's writer either wasn't familiar with the Church or was writing to an audience that knew little about the Church. I also wonder if the writer normally covers politics or business, because the article focused on those aspect. I thought it was interesting to see a point of view that is different from American media sources.

I love that we have a member of the Twelve from another country. I would love to see him serve as the Prophet some day. I think that would do amazing things for the Church. Of course, the Lord will call whom he will call.

I love Elder Uchtdorf, but don't care for most of the article. We are apparently simple-minded, provincial, unintellectual believers in the unbelievable. I won't oppose, but not worth promoting IMO.

On the contrary, Ted, I thought the tone of the article was part of why it was interesting. I don't find it particularly flattering either, but it's instructive as to how members of the foreign press view the Church. I think the Church's visibility in Germany is still fairly low -- when my friend lived there in the late 1990's, people would get Mormons and the Amish mixed up and ask why he wasn't wearing all black and a beard.
